Formaat’s primary focus is to work with people living in the margin of society. Important activities are the Theatre Action Studio’s in which we work with people with psychosocial problems and/or a psychiatric background. In weekly workshops situations from reality are reconstructed and alternatives are rehearsed.

Formaat also makes Forum Theatre plays for adults, gives workshops on conferences and symposiums, gives team trainings and works in communities on conflicts between the young and the old and on transcultural issues.

The current activities are:

Theatre Action Studio’s
Social inclusion workshops with Forum Theatre with legislative aspects for homeless people, people with psychiatric diagnoses and people with addictions.

Procesverslag Theaterayelier Rotterdam

Theatre Action Studio Rotterdam-Delfshaven – started in 2007 and continues as a permanent opportunity for people to work on their personal development and to raise issues about the humanisation of the care system.

DUNK – Dig into Underground Knowledge – started in 2008 as the legislative and performance branch of the Theatre Action Studio’s in Rotterdam and Haarlem. DUNK will culminate into two rallies in mid-2010, where a book will be presented to the care sector, full of ideas from the streets to change the care system.

Participatory Care and Social Work – a method transfer project in which institutions working with the Theatre Action Studio’s target groups learn to implement Participatory Drama in their work within 3 years.

Community Projects
We use Lightning Legislative Theatre to address community conflicts, usually between the young and the elderly. Each group gets to phrase their complaints and ideas in a workshop. Formaat processes the information into a multiple-protagonist Forum Theatre play. During the performance, a plan of action is created to tackle the conflicts in the community.

Until the end of 2009, fifteen of these projects were done, both in large cities as in small towns.

Image Theatre Workshops
With or without actors, designed for any occasion where issues of oppression are raised. These workshops are also offered internationally. The Image Theatre Performance lets images created by the audience be turned into Forum Theatre scenes through dynamisation techniques and improvisation.

Team trainings
We work a lot with professionals from social work, education and the care sector. Team trainings often reveal oppressive structures both for workers as for their so-called clients.

Forum Theatre Workshops
A one-issue mini-Forum play is created by professional actors and played at conferences and/or symposia. These projects can be very fast: rehearse today, play tomorrow.

Blagg! Workshops in football
Formaat works also in the world of sports. In the past we played Forum Theatre in football canteens, now we offer Blagg! Workshops in prevention programs to address violence on and around the pitch. We collaborate with the Royal Dutch Football Association.
