Deze Engelstalige masterclass toont de mogelijkheden van de verbinding tussen Playback Theater en Theater van de Onderdrukten. (TvO) Het verschil tussen deze twee toegepaste theatertechnieken, is dat Playback Theater in dienst staat van het verhaal van de Verteller, en TvO het verhaal van de Verteller gebruikt als springplank voor collectief onderzoek. De masterclass biedt een introductie tot de basisstructuren van Playback Theater, en geeft enkele modellen voor het combineren van deze twee werkvormen.

Marc Weinblatt werkt sinds 1980 als professioneel pedagoog, theaterartiest, activist en workshopleider, en trainde sinds de jaren ‘90 duizenden mensen in het gebruik van TvO technieken. Hij heeft in vele landen gewerkt met uiteenlopende groepen, variërend van politiemensen tot dakloze jongeren, burgeractivisten en bewoners van sloppenwijken tot faculteitsvoorzitters van universiteiten. Hij is regisseur bij het multi-generationele Poetic Justice Theatre Ensemble, dat TvO and Playback Theater technieken verweeft om dialoog in de gemeenschap aan te wakkeren over dringende sociale kwesties.

Playback Theatre and Theatre of the Oppressed (T.O.) can be used in tandem to work directly around issues of social justice. T.O. and Playback are usually practiced by completely separate communities of practitioners, this workshop will demonstrate the power of the two joining forces. The difference between these two internationally acclaimed applied theatre forms is that Playback Theatre serves the Teller’s story whereas T.O. uses the Teller’s story as a springboard for the collective exploration. T.O. has tended to have a more socio-political / action focus. In contrast, Playback Theatre, was designed to honor personal story. Both are interactive; both use physical imagery and improvisation; both  create a space for people to tell, listen, and actively transform society towards a more just world. This workshop will provide an introduction to basic Playback structures and present a few models for combining the two bodies of work.

Marc Weinblatt

Marc Weinblatt has been a professional educator, theatre artist, activist, and workshop facilitator since 1980. Founder of the Mandala Center for Change in Port Townsend, Washington, USA. Marc is an internationally recognized leader in the use of the Theatre of the Oppressed. He has worked with diverse communities ranging from police to homeless youth, grassroots organizers and laborers to University deans. Internationally, Marc has worked with theatre activists in Canada, refugees in Azerbaijan, construction workers in South Africa, slum families in India, actors in the Republic of Congo, and victims of war, among others, in Afghanistan. Marc was recently named “Cultural Envoy” by the U.S. State Department for his work in the Congo in spring 2010. He also directs the multi-generational Poetic Justice Theatre Ensemble which incorporates T.O. and Playback Theatre techniques to generate community dialogue on burning social issues. One of Augusto Boal’s “multipliers”, Marc has trained thousands of people in the use of Theatre of the Oppressed techniques through his classes and annual week-long intensive trainings since the early 1990’s.

The master class is ideal for cultural fieldworkers and Theatre of the Oppressed practioners. A working knowledge of Theatre of the Oppressed (Image and Forum) is required.
